A little history
Our Heritage
Many years ago, Craig's mother, Glenda, bought this piece of land in Sedgefield, not knowing what it looked like. Moving from Cape Town during the Lainsburg flood of 1981 to the Garden Route, she didn't know what to expect. At first, she thought it was only a small piece of land down by the river. Only to discover later that the ground stretched from the river at the bottom right to the top of the ridge behind the house. What a gem!
After school and college, Craig built a little wooden 'mancave' for himself with no running water or electricity, and named it Chorister Cottage after the local bird - Chorister Robin. After some time overseas, he returned, got married, and soon realized that this little cabin was not big enough. Remnants of the original mancave are still visible in the 2nd bedroom of Chorister Cottage. With his own hands, no experience, and little money, he set out on the adventure to expand it to the size it is today. The hillside is mostly clay and naturally shifts, which you will notice in the leaning floors and walls. Not to worry, though, it is perfectly safe.
Over the past 30 years, this house and the grounds have had their share of changes and facelifts, with proof of walls being moved, upgraded from candles and paraffin lamps to solar electricity, and from the old bucket water system to running water inside the house. River water is pumped via a solar system to tanks in the forest to ensure a good water pressure when opening the taps. And a gas geyser ensures a nice hot shower every time. Because of natural organisms, our water has a light brown colour, but it is completely safe to drink. Rainwater is also available. The grounds have been excavated into terraces, opening up the surrounding forest for airflow and clearing of alien vegetation. Because of the natural spring, extensive drainage had to be built to turn it into the place it is today.
While building and renovating the cabin to our requirements in 2019, we decided to share our off-grid living with others. Allowing them to get away from the rat race and discover the natural beauty we are blessed with. This place is our haven and a safe space to recharge your soul, away from everyday life.
Breathing in fresh air. Seeing wildlife and the occasional bushbuck. Hearing the hundreds of birds that call this valley home. Feeling the breeze and sweet smells that the forest has to offer. On a quiet night, you can hear the crashing waves of the ocean. Experience the tranquility and softness that make this place a piece of paradise. Close enough to the beautiful, slow town of Sedgefield for amenities. But still far enough to feel like you are away from the hustle and bustle.
A few years later, we had the opportunity to renovate and transform another little cabin, just down the road from us, into another unique stay here in Loerie Lane. In 2023, The Cobhouse was born, offering a private and secluded space for couples to reconnect and for solo travellers to recharge.
